There’s a reason why many dedicate their lives to participating, covering, and building businesses around the idea of competition and sport. This is certainly the case for Sarah Warren. Growing up in a motivated, athletic family, Sarah excelled in sports such as speed skating (where she was a Junior U.S. National Team member) and soccer. A talented student as well, Sarah had plenty of options to consider when it came to where she was going to go to college (she mentions the University of Chicago as an early frontrunner). However, when the University of Illinois called to offer a spot on the women’s varsity soccer team it was, in Sarah’s words, “an opportunity [she] couldn’t pass up. These days, Sarah is able to reflect as a senior class captain on the time and effort she’s dedicated to both the team and this university. She’s most proud of her work with the soccer team, both on and off the field. “The connections you make on the team is an opportunity not many get to experience, but it’s one of those that completely changes your life forever.” The soccer experience seems to be a unique one for Sarah: “It’s just one of those things where you’re either all in or not in at all, and when you’re all in you create these bonds and experiences that not only shape your time here but shape your time in the future.” Sarah on the pitch for the orange and blue Not only has Sarah been able to build important bonds, but develop important skills like leadership and time management through the sport. Sarah is a part of multiple engineering honors societies, vice president for the Illinois Sports Business Conference, a research assistant on campus, and spends many hours on community service and philanthropy. With such a diverse and challenging schedule, Sarah’s insights on time management can be valuable to any college student. “I’ve always really been busy, before even coming to school…it’s always been one of those things where you kind of have to fit things in. It’s just timing, and definitely something you mature into in college. Freshman year I would get six hours of sleep a night, tops, but I wouldn’t say it was necessarily all the work and responsibilities I had. It was just not planning.” Since her freshman year, Sarah learned to utilize the time management resources available in order to allow her to do more meaningful work. In addition, through this more meticulous organizing, she’s been able to find more time to develop meaningful relationships with her friends. “It would say that it’s a necessary [component]. When I am booking time out that’s something that always needs to be there because we are in college and you need to build and foster these relationships…those are the memories you’re going to remember.” An aside: one of the key takeaways I’ve noticed through this series is the importance of finding meaningful personal time and time with friends. It’s been the one thing that’s been universal so far. The 2016-17 ISBC Executive Board at the 3rd annual conference Professionally, Sarah cites her work with the Illinois Sports Business Conference as a major influence, as it gives her access to those in the field she’s interested in. She’s passionate about remaining in athletics as a professional, particularly on the medical side getting involved in orthopedics. It will, therefore, be wise to consider whether your desired employers have offices located in your city and whether there is a large number of companies in your target industries nearby.  We are lucky to be here in San Francisco, which has access to high-tech giants and a concentration of Fortune 500 companies like Google, Facebook, and LinkedIn. But what are you interested in? What do you want to ultimately do with your Master Degree? Your career goals should determine your decision.  For example, if your goal is to develop a career in finance or consulting and work on Wall Street or The City, ro tating to New York and London campuses would be a smart choice. However, I did not realize how important it is to keep in mind which industry you want to work in. San Francisco is full of opportunities; most of them are in tech, however, which is not my world. Many times I wonder whether I should have chosen New York as my last rotation campus. Although they are closely related to the house spiders building cobwebs in the corners of your home, black widows rarely come indoors. Female black widows have poor eyesight Black widows rely on their silk webs to see whats going on around them because they cant see very well. The black widow female usually hides in a hole or crevice and builds her web as an extension of her hiding spot. From the safety of her retreat, she can feel the vibrations of her web when either prey or predator comes in contact with the silk threads. Male widow spiders looking for mates use this to their advantage. The male black widow will cut and rearrange the females web, making it difficult for her to sense whats happening, before carefully approaching her to mate. Black widow venom is 15 times as toxic as that of the prairie rattlesnake Widow spiders do pack a powerful punch of neurotoxins in their venom. By volume, Lactrodectus venom is an extremely toxic mix of poisons capable of causing muscle cramps, severe pain, hypertension, weakness and sweating in bite victims. But black widow spiders are significantly smaller than rattlesnakes, and theyre built for subduing other small invertebrates, not large mammals like people. When a black widow spider bites a person, the volume of neurotoxins injected in the victim is small.   Black widow spider bites are rarely fatal Although black widow bites can be painful and require medical treatment, they are very rarely fatal.   In fact, the majority of black widow bites cause only mild symptoms, and many bite victims dont even realize they were bitten. In a review of over 23,000 documented Lactrodectus envenomation cases that occurred in the U.S. from 2000 to 2008, the study authors noted that not a single death occurred as a result of a black widow bite. Only 1.4% of bite victims suffered major effects of black widow venom. Before the invention of indoor plumbing, most black widow bites occurred in outhouses Black widows dont often invade homes, but they do like to inhabit human-built structures like sheds, barns, and outhouses. And unfortunately for those who lived before the water closet was commonplace, black widows like to retreat under the seats of outdoor privies, perhaps because the smell attracts so many delicious flies for them to catch. Men who use pit toilets should be aware of this disturbing little factoid – most black widow bites are inflicted on penises, thanks to their tendency to dangle threateningly into the black widows territory beneath the seat. A 1944 case study published in the Annals of Surgery noted that, of 24 black widow bite cases reviewed, eleven bites were on the penis, one was on the scrotum, and four were on the buttocks.
